BBS Copper Marans

Black/Blue/Splash Copper Marans: There are a lot of qualities to juggle when breeding Copper Marans - good copper distribution and tone, feathered legs, conformation, growth rate, and egg color - to name a few.  Our focus with the Marans is to select for respectable growth rates so that extra cockerels can be freezer-ready around 5 months.  When selecting breeding stock, we refer to the American Poultry Association's (APA) Standard of Perfection (SOP) for defined characteristics of the breed.  Those that stray too far from the SOP are removed from the breeding program.  A particular challenge with this breed is keeping an eye on egg color while balancing all the characteristics above.  The Marans Club USA has a color chart for egg color, and at this time the average offspring from the Big Red Acres flock will lay somewhere between a #4-#6 in egg color.
